DEREK LAM: Derek Lam told Style.com that he was planning to switch things up for Spring 2010, saying, “I haven’t done full-on color for a while, and it feels like the right moment now.” I guess he meant it because his collection was full on color, from rich sapphire blue shorts to bright blue blouses. With on-trend lace up sandals making an appearance, as well as exposed zippers and studded belts, this collection was exciting and the color definitely gave it some added buzz.
DKNY: This season’s collection from DKNY brought an attractive blend of cute floral vs solid colors, with floral print rompers and harem pants sharing the runway with classic black jumpsuits and structured white blazers. The Spring 2010 collection was full of on-trend separates, with cuffed shorts and boyfriend blazers a key feature. The ever-prevalent 80s theme was shown again here with bike shorts being seen under several of the outfits.
DIANE VON FURSTENBERG: I’m sort of in love with DVF’s collection for Spring 2010. To quote Rachel Zoe, I die. There seemed to be a little of everything from the 70s to the 90s here, with floaty, bohemian dresses from the 70s, neon bracelets from the 80s and the classic slip-dress-over-plain-tee trend of the 90s. DVF’s collection appears on paper to be a bit of a jumble but everything is very fluid and fits together perfectly. Plus, it’s all topped off with incredible gold shoes and eye shadow.
KAREN WALKER: The Karen Walker show started out with a distinct nautical theme, with navy and white striped prints making an appearance. Before you could settle in comfortably, polka dots started to emerge in a plethora of colors, and then suddenly we had psychedelic 60s-style floral prints in bright colors such as orange and turquoise. The bursts of color were always counterbalanced with sections of white and navy. Finally, to top it all off, a selection of straw hats and boat shoes to keep us totally grounded.
REBECCA TAYLOR: Rebecca Taylor’s Spring 2010 collection was a real mix of strong vs soft. Several sweaters and tees had a slightly-puffed sleeve with a strong shoulder, a continuation of the Fall 2009 strong shoulder trend. The collection mixed the tough side of things with more feminine silhouettes like the floral skirt and loose-fit shorts, above. Again, the colors were a mix of strong vs soft, with modern metallics making an appearance, combined with soft greys and dusty reds.
(L-R) REEM ACRA, TULEH, RACHEL ROY: Although the days of peace and love are long over, the Spring 2010 Reem Acra collection was apparently inspired by the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, with floral and ethnic prints, harem pants, embroidered tops and oversized necklaces all emerging. At Tuleh, we saw feminine embellishments, such as ruffles and bows, take their place on fitted shorts, while sheer fabrics took a spot underneath classic-cut blazers, all topped off with messy hair. The Rachel Roy collection was a fresh and modern take on classical pieces. The ultra-mini skirt (above) doesn’t look so ‘mini’ when mixed with a long-sleeved, sequined top. The Manolo Blahnik-designed footwear also kept it contemporary, with plenty of outfits that could be worn from day to night.
(L-R) ELISE ØVERLAND, HERVÉ LÉGER BY MAX AZRIA, BEHNAZ SARAFPOUR: Although the Elise Øverland Spring 2010 collection was her first real runway show, it looks like she has been doing it for a long time. A cohesive mix of edgy leather dresses, jackets and jeans, her show had a major rock-chic vibe. At Hervé Léger By Max Azria, the signature bandage dress was still there in all its glory, with gorgeous white lace and eyelet detail giving it a more laidback, hippy chic feel. The Behnaz Sarafpour collection featured a lot of mesh detail, sequins and satin, with the 80s a definite theme. The cropped sequin jacket (above) will definitely be a must-have on a few shopping lists when it hits the stores.
